Beach Volleyball Begins 2022 Campaign Friday at HBU Tournament

HOUSTON – The 2022 season will get underway Friday and Saturday for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program when it competes in four matches at the HBU Tournament, hosted by Houston Baptist University.
 
The Islanders will kick if off at 9 a.m. Friday against UL-Monroe, followed by a 3 p.m. Friday match against Southeastern. Saturday's matches include a 9 a.m. contest against New Orleans and a 1 p.m. bout against the host HBU.
 
Head coach Gayle Stammer enters her fifth season at the helm. She was 7-0 against SLC foes in the regular season last year, including five sweeps and coached the team to the championship match of the SLC Tournament. The Islanders were the highest ranked team of any in the league in the PABLO Team rankings to earn the No. 1 seed.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi has won 11 consecutive regular season matches against SLC opponents dating back to 2019.
 
The Islanders return four student-athletes who earned All-Conference last year. It includes the top pair of junior Giuliana Poletti Corrales and sophomore Brooke Pertuit. Junior Migle Mazurkeviciute earned All-Conference Second-Team honors at court five and senior Micaela Mirabal was tabbed to the Third-Team at court four.
 
Corrales and Pertuit played nearly every match together at court one last season and racked up 11 wins. Individually, Mirabal won 13 matches playing all over the lineup and Mazurkeviciute won 11.
 
The Islanders brought back seven student-athletes in total and reloaded with 11 newcomers including seven freshmen. A&M-Corpus Christi brought in a pair of grad transfers including Ashlyn Power from Weber State and Kiley Lewis from Boise State.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi is 5-3 all-time against UL-Monroe and has won five in a row, 2-0 all-time against Southeastern and 6-3 against New Orleans. The Islanders are 6-13 all-time against HBU but have won three of the last four.
