Another Weekend Tournament in Store for Softball

HOUSTON, Texas - After a week of time-off, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will compete in the Houston Tournament, its third tournament of the season, Friday through Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium.

A&M-Corpus Christi was originally set to play in a doubleheader matchup with Sam Houston on Wednesday but the games were rescheduled to a later date due to inclement weather.

The tournament will feature a five team field. The Islanders (7-7) will take on Lamar (2-8) first at 1 p.m. for their only game on Friday. On Saturday, A&M-Corpus Christi will take on Northern Colorado (2-8) and Houston (4-6) at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The Islanders will finish tournament play on Sunday with rematches against Northern Colorado and Houston at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Coming off of the Whataburger Softball Invitational, A&M-Corpus Christi added two more wins against Alabama State and a power-five Syracuse team. The tournament highlighted a walk-off homerun by freshman Jaquelin Garza in the game against the Orange, the second Islander homerun of the season.

Sophomore Sydney Hoyt continues to lead the team in batting average with a .440. She is on a 10-game streak of reaching base. Sophomore Kimane Rogron is on a five-game streak of registering a hit and has 10 total.

Leading the team in all three categories, junior Pal Egan records 13 runs, 15 hits and 12 RBIs. In the win against the Hornets, Egan earned her game-high of both runs and RBIs at three and four, respectively.

With five appearances each, junior Beatriz Lara and sophomore Megan Depew have been reliable in the circle. Lara records a 3.55 ERA and has struck out a team-high of 19 batters. Depew is right there under Lara with a 3.88 ERA and 17 strikeouts. They have both pitched a complete game this season.

A&M-Corpus Christi is on a three-game winning streak against Lamar. This will be only the second time the Islanders and the Bears have faced each other with the last time being in 2005 when the Islanders won 3-1. The Islanders haven't played Houston since 2018.

Both games against the Cougars will be streamed on ESPN+.
