Johnson Wins Islander Classic, A&M-Corpus Christi Places Third

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - At the conclusion of the 2022 Islander Classic, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program finished third out of 18 teams and had freshman member Anastacia Johnson place first out of 96 players.

After three rounds of golf, Johnson submitted the lowest total score of the tournament with a 215. In her first two rounds, she shot 70 both times to go two-under par. Despite her final round being five strokes higher at 75, Johnson was still able to maintain sole possession of first place. 

Sophomore Lucie Charbonnier was not too far behind Johnson as she tied for third individually. 

"I am so proud of Anastacia," said head coach Pat Stephens. "Her first of many collegiate wins. Lucie with a third-place tie. Two tournaments back-to-back that these two have been in top 10."

The team sat in first place through the first two rounds of the tournament but was just edged out in the last round to finish at third. The Islanders were only two strokes behind first-place Wofford College and one behind second-place HBU.

"We are getting closer and closer to being the type of team that we desire to be," said Stephens. "We play to win, and this team has shown two tournaments in a row that this goal is very much achievable. Only two shots out from winning going into the last few holes to decide."

Junior Lucy Martinez carded a 71 in her final round, her lowest of the tournament, to total a 228. Rounding out the team was sophomore Maria Beltran and freshman Reese Drezins. Beltran submitted a 74-78-79 - 231, while Drezins etched a 73-78-80 - 231.

The Islanders will next compete when they travel to play in the UTRGV Invitational on March 7-8.

"We are looking forward to playing and defending at UTRGV," said Stephens. "It is a familiar golf course that the team has had a lot of success on."
