STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Coming off a four-game winning streak at home and an eight run comeback, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program is looking to take that momentum into the weekend where they will compete in the Whataburger Softball Invitational at Tarleton State Friday through Sunday.
The Islanders (5-4) will begin tournament play with a 9:30 a.m. pitch against Alabama State (2-4) followed by a noon game versus Syracuse (5-0) on Friday. On Saturday, A&M-Corpus Christi will rematch both teams and then finish the weekend with an 11:30 a.m. game against host Tarleton State (5-0) on Sunday.
A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a 4-0 week at home with doubleheader sweeps over Green Bay and Prairie View on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sophomore Megan Depew pitched both days and threw complete games against both teams. She has now struck out 14 batters and records a 3.37 ERA.
In game one against the Panthers, A&M-Corpus Christi was down 11-3 and went on an eight run comeback to ultimately win the game with senior
Grace Gilbert walking it off in the seventh.
In the games against Green Bay, junior
Pal Egan earned a run each game and went 4-6 on the day. She is on a six-game streak of getting a run and has gotten on base in every game of the season so far.
Freshman
Paolina Baez registered two multi-hit games and now leads the Islanders with a .400 batting average. Sophomore
Gabriella Torres turned in three multi-hit games between the two days and is averaging a .385. She is tied with Egan for the most hits on the team at 10.
Junior
Sydney Hoyt was hot-at-bat and pulled in a game-high of five RBIs in the competition against Prairie View. She tallied a run and at least one hit against both teams.
A&M-Corpus Christi outscored the week's opposition 29-14 total and 7-2 in the sixth inning.
The Islanders have won every past meeting against the teams they will face in the weekend tournament. They faced Alabama State only once before in 2004 and won 14-1. They squared off against Syracuse for the first time in 2020 and won 7-3. This will be the fourth meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and Tarleton State.
