LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field program won two gold medals and broke a variety of top-10 school records at the Texas Tech Shootout.
"Overall, we had another good day today," said head coach
Brent Ericksen. "It was great to have the whole distance crew competing for the first time and I thought they did well."
Graduate Student
Valentina Campos was the first to lay claim to a victory late Friday night in the women's 5K, having run an 18:29.11 time. Junior
Dennis Kipngeno won the second gold medal for the Islanders in the men's 3K, running a 8:28.23 and teammate
Kelvin Kimaiyo, a freshman, came in second behind Kipngeno by less than half a second (8:28.58).
Fellow graduate student
Tristan Stellmach ran the men's mile where he came in eighth with a time of 4:16.29. His time places him fourth all-time and is a new personal best for him.
Around the same time, senior
Erika Snyder set a new personal record in the high jump with a leap of 1.72m, earning her sixth-place. The jump places her second all-time for the Islanders. On the other side of high jump, junior
Spencer Bigner earned a tenth-place finish, soaring 2.04m into the air and into fourth all-time.
"Kipngeno and Kimaiyo went 1-2 in the 3K and the women did a nice job in the mile," continued Ericksen. "Stellmach for the men put up a nice PR there as well. The high jump produced a couple nice personal bests as well for both Bigner for the men and Snyder for the women."
Junior
Leonardo Ledgister broke into the finals of the men's 400m and earned a fourth-place finish, clocking a time of 47.06s. Ledgister continued A&M-Corpus-Christi's record-breaking season as he ran not only a personal best, but a new school record with the performance.
Senior
Ke'Tavion Humber concluded the men's 60m hurdles by also running a new personal best time of 7.97s to place sixth behind four Power 5 competitors. En route to the finals, Humber won his heat (8.02s) in prelims to advance to the semi-finals. Once in the semis, Humber continued to power forward with a time of 7.97s to launch him into the finals where he proceeded to run another 7.97s performance. Both of the performances put him second-all time in Islander history in the event.
Three Islanders earned top six finishes in the women's mile, with graduate student
Quin Johnson leading the team with a time of 5:07.58. Senior
Faith Bett came in immediately behind Johnson in fourth (5:08.39) and
Sharon Kiprop, a sophomore, took home sixth, running 5:11.49, only three seconds behind Bett. Johnson and Bett's times place them sixth and seventh respectively in the event all-time for A&M-Corpus Christi.
