CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team is hosting Northwestern State and Lamar at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer & Track Stadium on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. respectively. The three teams are atop the conference standings and are battling it out for the top seed for the Southland Conference Tournament.
"They're two great teams and I think we can match them very easily," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "I'm excited to see what we can do on our home turf against two very good teams."
The Islanders are coming off their second shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory over Nicholls on Sunday afternoon. It completed the season sweep of the Colonels, the second season sweep for A&M-Corpus Christi after defeating UIW twice as well, earning their first shutout in the latter of the matchups against the Cardinals.
After posting five goals on the weekend, the Islanders have broken the program record for most goals in an SLC season at 17 after shattering the overall season goals record earlier this season, now totaling 33 goals. The team has also broken the program record for assists in a season with 28 and is tied for the most in conference play at 12.
A&M-Corpus Christi sits 22nd in all of Division I women's soccer in scoring offense, averaging 2.36 goals per game to lead the conference. The team has earned 6.79 points per game to lead the conference and have attained 26th in the nation in the category.
Sophomore
Morgan Westbury leads the team in points with 16, earning seven goals and two assists in the 2022 campaign. Her penalty kick goals continue to have her ranked at the national level as she has gone 4-4 on the season. Classmate
Megan Guy is tied with Westbury in goals and has one less assist. Both players have a hat trick, the only two on the team to have done so thus far.
A&M-Corpus Christi has earned two SLC Defensive Player of the Week honors with sophomores
Emma Crump and
Rachel Loetzer each earning one a piece. Loetzer was the recipient this week, knocking two goals into the net against Nicholls as one was assisted by senior
Emma Gibbs and the other an unassisted goal.
