A&M-Corpus Christi Women Defeat UTRGV in South Texas Showdown at College Station

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's cross country program won the South Texas Showdown against UTRGV at the Arturo Barrios invitational hosted by Texas A&M as the men were edged out by one spot.

"Dennis was amazing today and it really sets him up for conference and regionals," said head coach Brent Ericksen. "On the women's side, Faith was our number one again."

Senior Dennis Kipngeno led the charge for the men, finishing in third place with a time of 23:26.9. He completed the race just four seconds behind the race winner from Tulane and three seconds behind a runner from Texas A&M. Junior Enock Kimutai earned 30th in the effort, crossing the finish line with a 24:26.8 mark.

The men placed 23rd of 40 teams in attendance, just one slot behind the Vaqueros in 22nd. Other scorers for the Islanders included Juan Salinas III, a grad student, senior Hunter Haas and sophomore Gregorio Alcorta.

Faith Bett, a grad student, finished 30th for the women with a time of 21:29.9 followed by senior Sharon Kiprop in 87th for A&M-Corpus Christi with a mark of 22:21.5. Senior Cambria Clark scored third for the team with freshman Franziska Dempwolf in fourth and Ayanna Palomo, a redshirt freshman, rounding out the pack.

As a team, the women earned 27th out of 38 competing teams. The UTRGV women finished 29th in the competition as the two teams split the South Texas Showdown.

Ericksen continued, saying, "Both groups have some work to do to get ready for conference in two weeks."

A&M-Corpus Christi is scheduled for a week off before going to Thibodaux, Louisiana for the Southland Conference Championships on October 28.
