SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's women's and men's cross country programs competed at the UIW Invitational Saturday morning, finishing fourth and seventh respectively.
"
Enock Kimutai looked really comfortable and took off in the second half of the race," said head coach
Brent Ericksen. "It was a spread out race for the women and it's another stepping stone to where we need to be for conference."
Kimutai, a junior, won the race on the men's side, crossing the finish line with a time of 24:29.9, over half a minute ahead of second place. This marked the second race he has competed in for the Islanders and his first victory. Sophomore
Rogerio Gomez finished 36th for the team with a 26:23.2Â mark.
Grad student Juan Salinas crossed the line at 26:39.5 for 41st. Sophomore
Gregorio Alcorta and senior
Hunter Haas scored fourth and fifth for the Islanders respectively, coming in 51st and 59th.
Logan Rickey, a sophomore, and freshman Matthew Flores came in 67th and 82nd.
Faith Bett and
Sharon Kiprop, a grad student and a junior, finished highest for the team in third and eighth, respectively. Bett came across the line at 21:44.6 and Kiprop followed at 22:49.1. Senior
Riley Cowan competed in her first collegiate cross country race, coming in 27th with a mark of 23:55.9.
Shortly behind her was classmate
Cambria Clark in 30th to score fourth for the team. The final Islander to score was
Ayanna Palomo, a redshirt freshman. Junior Tristan Nemac rounded out the squad with a 78th-place finish.
A&M-Corpus Christi will return to competition at the Texas A&M Aggie Invite on October 15.Â
