HOUSTON, Texas - Senior
Trpimir Siroki shone for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's track & field teams by claiming two gold medals at the FasTrak Collegiate Challenge.
"The highlight today was Siroki," said head coach
Brent Ericksen. "He set the long jump record by over a foot with his jump then went 6'10 in the high jump before he got some work in the shot put. I'm looking forward to seeing him and the rest of the team compete at Texas Tech next weekend."
Siroki led the team by winning the high jump and the long jump. His leap of 7.39m in long jump breaks another Islander school record, placing him first all-time. He followed up the performance in high jump, soaring 2.08m off the ground before finishing 34th in shot put, heaving it 11.73m.
Fellow high jumper Spencer Bigner, a junior, followed Siroki in fourth place (1.98m) as Freshman Jamal Dawson (1.93m) took fifth place. Freshman Noah Gonzales earned 13th in high jump (1.83m) with Senior Daniel Armstrong rounding out them out in 16th (1.78m). Senior Erika Snyder tied for eighth with a leap of 1.62m in the women's high jump.
Junior Riley Cowan ran a 2:26.30 in the 800m to earn a seventh-place finish. In the same event, Freshman Jakob Gunter found his way to an eighth-place finish, running a 1:59.27 while Freshman Reese Lara placed 21st, posting a 2:09.03 time.
Islanders flooded the women's 200m dash with six competitors with Freshman Lamyia Styles leading the pack in 8th with a time of 25.88s. Capri Wilson, a sophomore, came in 16th (26.10s) and Junior T'Anna Dawkins in 16th (26.12s). The final three finishers for A&M-Corpus Christi were Sophomore Yasmine Steele (24th, 26.43s), Senior Larissa Manciaz (25th, 26.44) and Freshman Bailey Cook (27th, 26.57s).
Five men competed in the 200m dash as Graduate Student Timor Barrett ran a time of 22.08s,to earn 14th place. Junior Leonardo Ledgister came in 26th (22.52), Freshman Demari Walker in 47th (23.15s) and Freshman Max Rutherford in 49th (23.20s). The other two finishers were Sophomore John Moreno (62nd, 23.73s) and Freshman Roberto Gonzales (65th, 23.95s).
The women's mile had three Islanders competing as Quin Johnson, a graduate student, (5:19.99) ran to a 10th place finish as Junior Cambria Clark (5:40.06) and Senior Marissa Martinez (5:59.16) came in 21st and 30th respectively.
Senior Juan Salinas III set a personal record and with a time of 8:52.01 to place seventh in the 3,000m run. Also setting a personal record was Freshman Roderio Gomez in ninth with a time of 8:56.02. Senior Andrew Gandy rounded out the men's runners in 20th (9:23.53). The women ran a 2,800m race as Graduate Student Valentina Campos posted a time of 10:35.39 for ninth place. Junior Jasmine Perez came in 14th with a time of 11:22.03.
For the men's mile, Freshman Gregorio Alcorta ran a time of 4:41.47 for 27th with
Hunter Haas, a junior, following him in 28th, clocking in at 4:42.21.
Three women competed in the first 60m dash, led by Wilson (7.90s) in 14th with Cook (7.98s) finishing in 18th and Styles (8.00s) in 20th. On the men's side of the event, Sophomore
Deon McIver posted a 7.20 time for 30th.
There was another women's and men's 60m dash held later where Styles placed fifth with a time of 8.04s. Cook followed in sixth (8.05s) with Steele (12th, 8.13s) and Freshman
Taylor Maashoff (27th, 8.58s) coming in behind her. For the men, Barrett placed ninth (7.17s) and Ledgister finished 11th (7.17s). Other Islanders include Walker (19th, 7.29s), R. Gonzales (20th, 7.30s) and Rutherford (31st, 7.46s).
The track & field teams will be attending the Texas Tech Invite in Lubbock, Texas next weekend, Jan. 28-29.
