CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A goal in the final minute by senior
Reaghan Lang propelled the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program to a 1-0 victory over UTRGV on Sunday at Dugan Stadium in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
The goal came off a corner kick. Junior
Emma Gibbs sent a ball into the middle of the six-yard box and Lang came leaping in for the header and finished into the top shelf.
It was A&M-Corpus Christi's (2-3) first-ever home win over UTRGV (2-3) in program history.
"I'm so proud of these ladies. It was the third game in five days. They really brought the energy and passion tonight and deserved this result," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
The Islanders outshot the Vaqueros 12-10 in the game, including 8-5 in the second half.
Sophomore
Emma Herrera played 90 minutes and fired a team-high three shots, all on set pieces plays. Junior
Emma Gibbs and freshman Megan fired registered two shots apiece.
In net, sophomore
Kennedy Stelling posted a clean sheet and made six saves. She was aided in the back by freshman
Emma Crump who played 90 minutes. Gibbs also played the entire way.
The Vaqueros were led by Emily Zapata's five shots.
With the win, the Islanders evened the 2021-22 South Texas Showdown series standings 3.0-3.0. As an institution, A&M-Corpus Christi leads 4-1 and has won in back-to-back years.
Sunday was the team's final tune-up before their first conference game against HBU on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at Dugan Stadium.
