CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Looking to close out the weekend on a high note, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program will host UTRGV at 7 p.m. Sunday at Dugan Stadium in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
The showdown is a 12-sport competition between the two institutions. As a department, the Islanders lead the all-time series 4-1 and have won in back-to-back years.
The Islanders (1-3) are looking to shake-off a pair of 1-0 defeats that could have gone either way, most recently against Prairie View A&M on Friday.
"This is a chance to show what we can do when we come out and play without fear and a purpose. We need to show that Friday was just a blip in what we want to achieve as a team," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
A&M-Corpus Christi will also look to avenge a 2-0 defeat to the Vaqueros (2-2) earlier this year on the road. The Islanders will be going for their first-ever home win against UTRGV in program history.
Junior
Samantha Palomino has led the offense with three goals and 10 shots on target. Senior
Reaghan Lang and freshman
Megan Guy also have goals on the year.
In the back, sophomore
Emma Herrera has played all 360 minutes on the season. She's been aided by fellow center back
Emma Crump, a freshman that's played 315 minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kennedy Stelling has made the last three starts in net and has blocked 20 saves.
UTRGV is coming off a 2-0 win over Texas Southern. Anna Barkey and Shentatious Knox have scored two goals apiece and four of the team's five goals on the year. Senior keeper Maile Lunardi has posted two shutouts in three games.
Sunday will wrap-up a busy stretch for the Islanders and will be their third game in five days. It's also their final tune-up before their first conference game against HBU on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at Dugan Stadium.
