Islanders Begin Lengthy Road Swing Friday at UIW

Watch | Live Stats

SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program will knock out the rest of its road schedule over the course of the next four weeks, beginning Friday with a 5 p.m. match at UIW at Benson Stadium.

"This game will be a test of both our mental and physical strength. They (UIW) are way better than their record so we have to come to play," said head coach Craig Shaw. "UIW is also the most physical team we will play so we'll have to deal with that too."

It's the first of six road matches for the Islanders (4-5-2, 2-1-2 SLC), who are coming off a 2-1-1 home stand with wins over first-place McNeese and Nicholls. Most recently, A&M-Corpus Christi ousted the Colonels 2-0 on second half goals by sophomores Olivia Alvarez and Maggie Murray.

Junior Samantha Palomino has registered four goals and two assists on the year. Senior Reaghan Lang, freshman Megan Guy and Murray have each scored two goals apiece. Guy has come on strong as of late with a goal and two assists this past weekend against Southeastern and Nicholls.

In back, sophomore Emma Herrera has started all 11 games and has logged a team-high 1,016 minutes. Fellow center back freshman Emma Crump is second on the team in minutes with 952, while sophomores Jayden Rea and Reese Cross have also been staples and have started all 11 games as wing backs.

The Islanders flipped goalkeepers this past weekend as sophomore Kennedy Stelling and freshman Emily Levy both saw action. Stelling has seen the bulk of the week on the season with 60 saves in nine games, while Levy has made a pair of starts and is coming off a shutout against Nicholls.

UIW (1-8-1, 1-3 SLC) played a tough non-conference schedule and has dropped a trio of closely contested league matches. Its lone win came over Nicholls 2-0 where it carried a 28-3 edge in shots. Sierra Wannamaker leads the team with a pair of goals on the year.

A&M-Corpus Christi is 2-1-1 all-time in road games at UIW. The Cardinals won 1-0 last season in Corpus Christi, but two years ago the Islanders knocked them out of the SLC Tournament.
