Golf Places Sixth at SHSU Bearkat Invitational, Sample Matches Career-Best Round

Final Results

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – A sixth-place finish out of 14 Division I programs was how it concluded for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf program after three rounds Monday and Tuesday at the SHSU Bearkat Invitational at Elkins Lake Country Club.

The Islanders were led by senior Kellsey Sample and freshman Reagan Gray who tied for seventh-place individually with 218 scores. Sample matched her career-best round with a 70 in round three after a pair of 74's. Gray was consistent with a 74-71-73.

"I was very pleased to see the scores out of Kellsey and Reagan. I believe this is the best ball-striking from start to finish in a tournament for Kellsey in her years as an Islander. I am very proud of the way she is playing with such confidence and maturity, staying patient and intentional throughout every round. Reagan had another good performance - I was impressed with her fight throughout the tournament. Although she struggled some with her ball-striking, she was able to hold on and bring in good scores," said head coach Joni Stephens.

As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi submitted a 303-293-295—891. Sam Houston was 22 strokes ahead to win on its home course.

"We saw some really good things out of our players this week. Our ball-striking and chipping has really improved. Not only are we hitting more greens, we are hitting closer to pins and having more birdie opportunities. Unfortunately, our birdie conversion has not been what we are looking for, and we are still having the occasional big number in a round that is preventing us from lower scores," Stephens said.

A pair of top-30 finishes were tallied by sophomore Lucie Charbonnier and junior Lucy Martinez. Charbonnier carded a 76-74-77—227, while Martinez ended with a 79-74-75—228.

Rounding it out for A&M-Corpus Christi was freshman Anastacia Johnson. In her first-ever collegiate meet, she turned in an 87-77-78—242.

The Islanders have finished in the top half in both of their fall meets this season. They started the year by placing fifth out of 16 at Missouri State.

It will be a quick turnaround for A&M-Corpus Christi as it competes again next week at the NMSU Aggie Invitational on Oct. 4-6 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
