SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A strong showing was submitted by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf program in its season opening tournament as it tied for fifth place in a 16-team field after three rounds of the Missouri State Payne Stewart Memorial at Twin Oaks Country Club.
Â
The Islanders posted their best round on the final day and carded an overall tally of 303-302-299—904 (+52). A&M-Corpus Christi was just one stroke out of third place.
Â
"Overall, I am pleased with our top-five finish for our first tournament of the fall. It is always our goal to improve every round, and we did that this week," said head coach
Joni Stephens. "Unfortunately, the back nine got the best of us the first day, and we had some big numbers on a few holes. We played tentatively at times and struggled a little getting used to the speed of the greens. In the final round, we showed greater patience and managed the back side much better, and we had a lot more birdies throughout the day."

In her first collegiate meet, freshman
Reagan Gray led the Islanders with a 76-71-73--220 (+7) score and placed 11th overall. She tied for the team's low round with a 71 along with sophomore
Lucie Charbonnier who ended in 20th with a 71-81-74—226 (+13). Charbonnier averaged a 75.33 per round, which was better than her team-best 76.67 last season.
Â
"Both Lucie and freshman Reagan led the team this week with an even par round. I was very proud of Reagan's strong performance, finishing at 7-over par and tied for 11th in her first college tournament," Stephens said.
Â
Not far behind were senior
Kellsey Sample and junior
Lucy Martinez. Sample turned in a top-25 card of 79-74-75—228 (+15) and two strokes behind was Martinez with a 77-76-77—230 (+17).
Â
Senior
Kelli Ann Dugan rounded it out with an 80-85-77—242 (+29) after recording her best score in round three.
Â
"As we begin preparing for our next tournament in two weeks, we need to build on the things we learned this week. We have to do a better job of taking advantage of our good shots and making the most of our birdie opportunities," Stephens said.
Â
Next up, the Islanders will compete in the SHSU Bearkat Invitational on Sept. 27-28 in Huntsville, Texas.
