CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In the first of three games in five days, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program will host UTSA at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dugan Stadium.
Â
"With all the injuries we have right now, this is a great opportunity for our young players to get game time against what will be the best side we see this season," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
Â
The contest will be followed by a road game at 7 p.m. Friday at Prairie View A&M and a home game at 1 p.m. Sunday against UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
Â
The Islanders are off to a 1-1 start, including 1-0 at home. They ousted Texas Southern 5-0 in their season opener on Aug. 22 before dropping a 2-0 road contest to the Vaqueros this past Friday.
Â
Junior
Samantha Palomino has paced the offense with team-highs of three goals and seven shots. She tallied the first hat trick in program history against TSU and followed it up with three shots on goal against UTRGV.
Â
Also with goals are senior
Reaghan Lang and freshman
Megan Guy. Sophomore
Natalie Gonzalez has dished out two assists. Palomino, Lang, Guy and Gonzalez have all started both games in addition to sophomore
Molly Arens, sophomore
Emma Herrera, junior
Alana Mangan and sophomore
Jayden Rea.
Â
Herrera has been a staple to the back line and has played all 180 minutes. Mangan and freshman
Emma Crump have also seen a lot of action on defense with 150 and 135 minutes, respectively.
Â
The Islanders have used two different keepers. Freshman
Emily Levy posted a clean sheet against TSU, and sophomore
Kennedy Stelling got the start and made four saves against UTRGV.
Â
UTSA is off to a strong 3-1 start with wins over Tulsa, Cal Baptist and Grand Canyon. Its only loss was to 16th-ranked Oklahoma State.
Â
Three-time All-Conference USA selection Ellis Patterson and Anna Sutter have scored two goals apiece. UTSA brought back 17 of 21 letterwinners and all 15 student-athletes who earned starts in the spring.
Â
The Islanders and the Roadrunners are an even 2-2-1 all-time against each other. Both of A&M-Corpus Christi's wins came at home, most recently a 2-1 decision in 2017.
