EDINBURG, Texas – To kick-off the 2021-22 South Texas Showdown as a department, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program will square off with UTRGV in a 7 p.m. game Friday at the UTRGV Soccer & Track Complex.

The showdown is presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union and is a 12-sport competition between the two institutions. As a department, the Islanders lead the all-time series 4-1 and have won in back-to-back years.

It will be the first regular season road contest of the year for women's soccer. The Islanders are coming off a 5-0 win over Texas Southern last weekend and are 1-0 overall for the first time in program history.

The victory featured the first-ever hat trick in program history by junior
Samantha Palomino. Senior
Reaghan Lang and freshman
Megan Guy also found the back of the net, while sophomore
Natalie Gonzalez, sophomore
Reese Cross, freshman
Raegan Sharer and junior
Emma Gibbs all recorded assists.

Palomino was honored as the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Freshman
Emily Levy was named the SLC Goalkeeper of the Week after making five saves and posting a clean sheet.

The Vaqueros opened their season with a 3-1 defeat on the road at South Dakota State. Shentatious Knox scored in the 16th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the time.

UTRGV finished 10-7-2 overall and 7-6-1 in the WAC last season before getting knocked out of the first round of the conference tournament to New Mexico State 3-0.

Last season, both games between the Islanders and Vaqueros went past 90 minutes. UTRGV scored the golden goal in Corpus Christi, and the game in Edinburg ended in a 0-0 tie after two overtimes.

A&M-Corpus Christi's next home game is Wednesday, Sept. 1 when it hosts UTSA at 7 p.m. at Dugan Stadium.
