Ledgister Earns Spot on Jamaican Olympic Team, will Head to Tokyo

July 01, 2021

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's track & field All-American Leonardo Ledgister earned a spot on the Jamaican Olympic Team in the 400m hurdles, announced by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association.

Ledgister will become the first ever active A&M-Corpus Christi student-athlete to compete in the Olympics.

"When I saw the announcement of who was selected and saw my name at the top of the list I was surprised to the point where I couldn't believe it," Ledgister said. "When I calmed myself down, I realized that I really put in the hard work throughout the season and was grateful it paid off in the end. Don't stop when you're tired, stop when you're done because champions run harder when it's hard to run."

Ledgister recently completed his sophomore season with the Islanders and represented the University in the finals of the NCAA Championships. He finished sixth in the nation in the 400m hurdles with a time of 49.28.

Ledgister set his Olympic standard time of 48.79 at NCAA West Regionals, which was a personal record.

"I'm really excited for Leo and it's great to see all of his hard work pay off. He battled through a lot of adversity this year and even missed several weeks of training in March. For him to reach this level in such a short time and accomplishing it as a sophomore is really special," said Islanders head coach Brent Ericksen.

Ledgister won the Southland Conference in the event and broke a 31-year championship meet record with a time of 49.23. Ledgister also earned SLC All-Conference accolades in the 2021 indoor season.

In the outdoor regular season, Ledgister won two meets, including the J. Fred Duckett Twilight and the Roadrunner Invitational.

Ledgister will be part of the 62-member Jamaican Olympic Team. The 2020 Olympic Games will commence on July 23, 2021.
