EUGENE, Oregon – Only one more race stands between sophomore
Leonardo Ledgister and a national championship as he advanced to the finals of the 400m hurdles Wednesday at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
The finals are scheduled for 8:27 p.m. (CT) Friday on ESPN2.
Ledgister entered the night needing a top-nine finish out of 24 student-athletes to advance. He sprinted for a time of 49.82, which was good for sixth-place overall.
"I'm really excited for Leo as he moves on to the final round," said head coach
Brent Ericksen. "I thought he ran a conservative race given the wet conditions. I think we'll see a much more aggressive race in the finals!"
Ledgister's time was less than a second away from the top score of 48.85 by Moitalel Mpoke from Texas A&M. Ledgister's personal record of 48.79 that he tallied at NCAA West Regionals on May 29 would have been the top time.
In the finals, Legister will be competing against student-athletes from Texas A&M, LSU, USC, Texas, Auburn, Oklahoma, Oregon and Houston.
Ledgister will look to become the first national champion at A&M-Corpus Christi since Shadrack Songok won the 10,000m in 2008 (his third national title). By reaching the finals, he earned All-America First-Team honors, becoming the first Islander to do so since Hickel Woolery in 2009 in the discus.
