Slugfest Ends ACU’s Way in Season Finale

ABILENE, Texas – In the final game of the 2021 season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi ended on the short end of a 10-9 decision to Abilene Christian on Saturday at Poly Wells Field.
 
The game between the Islanders (18-30, 8-16 SLC) and the Wildcats (14-32, 10-17 SLC) featured 19 runs and 27 hits. A&M-Corpus Christi out-hit ACU 14-13.
 
With two hits in the game, freshman Haley Morse finished the season on a six-game hitting streak and 20-game reached base safely streak. It was her ninth multi-hit game of the year.
 
Freshman Alexandria Torres went 3-for-4 at the plate. She was the only student-athlete on the team to knock three hits in two games this season.
 
Also with a multi-hit game was sophomore Ashleigh Sgambelluri. It was her 11th of the year and Sgambelluri was the only student-athlete on the roster to start in all 48 games.
 
The Islanders got on the board first with an RBI single by sophomore Pal Egan. It scored Sgambelluri who singled, advanced to second on a hit by Morse and stole third.
 
After ACU answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, A&M-Corpus Christi responded with three runs in the second to go up 4-2. It came on a two RBI double by Sgambelluri to left center and she also came in to score on a throwing error.
 
The Islanders maintained a two-run lead in the fourth when Morse notched a two-out RBI single to center to score Noyola and make it a 5-3 game.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi kept the bats going in the fifth. After an RBI single by sophomore Quinn De Avila, senior Skye Koehl came in to pitch hit and launched a two-run homer to catapult ahead 8-3.
 
However, the critical frame came in the bottom of the fifth when the Wildcats scored seven runs on seven hits. It included a go-ahead three-run homer by Kayla Keeling.
 
The Islanders had one last chance in the seventh. A lead-off homer by sophomore Beatriz Lara cut the deficit to 10-9. Torres kept it going with a single up the middle, but ACU was able to wipe the bases clean after a double play. The game ended on a ground out to short.
 
Lara threw 4.1 frames and freshmen Madison Johnson and Audrey McNeill both made appearances out of the bullpen. McNeill threw a perfect inning of relief in the sixth.
