Islanders in First-Place after Day One of 2021 PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Getting off to a strong start, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program leads the pack after round one Monday at the 2021 PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
 
The Islanders carded a 302 and have a three-stroke lead over Delaware State for second. Three of the five A&M-Corpus Christi student-athletes rank top-five individually on the leaderboard.
 
"I'm very pleased with today's round. We played with a lot of confidence and patience, and we did a good job of staying present in the shot. Kellsey, Lucie, and Kelli were solid today; Reese and Lucy struggled a little with speed control on their putting. Overall, a good effort on the Valley course," said head coach Joni Stephens.

Senior Kellsey Sample, an SLC All-Conference Third-Team selection, sits in second place with a 73 (+1). She's two strokes out of first place behind Delaware State's Baipor Khunsri who turned in a 71.
 
One stroke behind Sample is fellow All-Conference Third-Team honoree freshman Lucie Charbonnier with a 74. Junior Kelli Ann Dugan is also top-five with a 76.
 
Rounding it out for the Islanders was freshman Reese Drezins with a 79 and sophomore Lucy Martinez with an 82.
 
Play will continue with one round Tuesday and a final round Wednesday.
 
The PWCC is considered to be the most culturally significant championship in golf and represents Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) from all over the country.
