CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program held its Senior Day festivities Sunday at Cabaniss Field. Houston Baptist grabbed both games of the doubleheader 2-1 and 2-0.
Â
Before the first game, the Islanders honored
Kennedy Jimenez,
Daisy Gonzalez,
Katrina Jackson and
Skye Koehl in a special Senior Day ceremony. Between games, they distinguished
Kandace Johnson as she concluded her career in 2020 but did not have a Senior Day due to COVID-19 cutting the season short.

Â
Both games between the Islanders (18-27, 8-13 SLC) and the Huskies (21-14, 14-10 SLC) were pitcher's duels that were decided by just a few at-bats.
Â
In game one, HBU scored two runs in the first inning, which stood up until the sixth. The Islanders cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the final frame after Gonzalez came off the bench to pitch hit and knocked an RBI single to right.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi had a chance in the bottom of the seventh. Jimenez walked to start it off and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Though, she didn't get any further as HBU ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts.
Â
Sophomore
Beatriz Lara threw a complete-game and allowed just two runs. She struck out three. Lyndie Swanson pitched the whole way for HBU and was credited the win after striking out 10.
Â
Sophomore
Ashleigh Sgambelluri turned in her 10th multi-hit game of the year.
Â
In game two, there was no score until the fifth inning when the Huskies scratched across a run on an RBI ground out. The tacked-on another in the sixth to go up 2-0.
Â
Like game one, the Islanders threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore
Pal Egan singled to start it off, and with one out A&M-Corpus Christi placed runners on second and third after a double by junior
Tiler Noyola. However, the game ended after a pop up and fly out.
Â
Freshman
Audrey McNeill tossed a complete-game and struck out five. Jessica Patak got the win for the Huskies after striking out seven in the complete-game shutout.
Â
Egan notched her team-leading 12th multi-hit game of the season.
Â
The Islanders are now 23-16 all-time against HBU and 14-10 at home, although the games were not played at Chapman Field due to the heavy rain over the weekend and field conditions.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi will wrap-up the regular season next weekend at Abilene Christian. Game one is slated for 5 p.m. Friday.
