Ledgister Strikes Gold to Conclude Islanders’ Final Day at Southland Championships

HUMBLE, Texas Headlined by Leonardo Ledgister's gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field closed out the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships with plenty of hardware Sunday at Turner Stadium.

After setting a record-breaking time in yesterday's preliminary round, Ledgister blew past the competition with another program-best time of 49.23 to claim his first Southland champion title. The time ranks fourth in the NCAA West and smashed the previous championship meet record of 49.53 set in 1990.

Daniel Armstrong (53.05) and Timor Barrett (55.79) scored points in the 400-meter hurdles final, placing fourth and seventh while earning the Islanders 17 total points in the event.

"Really proud of the way our team finished the year," said head coach Brent Ericksen. "Leonardo stood out this weekend with an incredible performance in the 400-meter hurdles that broke the meet record and ranks fourth in the NCAA west region while Kipngeno collected a pair of all-conference honors."

Dennis Kipngeno followed up his day-one silver with another in the 5,000-meter, clocking a 14:37.87 race for the runner-up finish.

The Islanders earned a pair of bronze medals in the relay portion, with the women's team of T-Anna Dawkins, Larissa Manciaz, Jadyn Wagner and Yasmine Steele breaking the school record with a 3:45.10 mark in the 4x400 event.

On the men's side of the 4x400 relay, Armstrong, Keenan Lawrence, Ke'Tavion Humber and Ledgister posted a 3:11.96 time to collect another third-place relay finish for the Islanders.

Rounding out the medal winners, Lawrence (1:51.63) claimed the bronze medal in the 800-meter race while Capri Wilson added to the Islanders' hardware haul with a career-best and program-breaking 11.47 mark in the 100-meter dash.

"Capri Wilson impressed with her school record and NCAA qualifying time of 11.47 in the 100-meter dash," said Ericksen. "The 4x400 relay team also posted a standout performance to claim bronze and topple another program mark."

A&M-Corpus Christi tallied several top-10 individual finishes, as Erika Snyder (1.70m) tied for fourth in the high jump, Devon Polk (14.24) took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and Zachary Seaman leapt to a season-best 2.01 in the high jump to place eighth in his last event for the blue and green.

Stephen F. Austin swept the Southland Conference Outdoor overall titles, while the men placed eighth with 48 cumulative points while the women finished 11th in the league standings.

Opening the third day of championship action, the women's 4x100 team of Wilson, Steele, Manciaz and Sierra Pruitt ran a 46.85 to finish seventh.

With their NCAA qualifying performances, Ledgister, Barrett and Wilson move on to the NCAA West Championship field in College Station, Texas on May 27.
