Islanders Return to Chapman Field to Host First-Place SFA

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After completing a six-game road swing, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will begin a seven-game home stand Friday when it hosts Stephen F. Austin in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Chapman Field.
 
The home stand will include a three-game series against both SFA and Nicholls, as well as a mid-week game versus UTSA.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi (15-19, 6-6 SLC) will look to hand the Ladyjacks (21-8, 12-0 SLC) their first conference loss off the season. SFA has sweeps over Incarnate Word, Nicholls, Lamar and Abilene Christian.
 
The Islanders are .500 in conference and are going for their first winning season since 2015 when they finished 15-11 SLC. The program hasn't finished above .500 overall since a 41-19 (21-9 SLC) mark in 2011.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi won the final game of the series last weekend at Incarnate Word. It was a 1-0 victory as sophomore Beatriz Lara tossed a complete-game shutout.
 
Sophomore Ashleigh Sgambelluri has tallied a hit in 14 of the last 15 games. She leads the team with a .327 average and is the only student-athlete to start in all 34 games.
 
Sophomore Pal Egan leads the team in on-base percentage with a .460 clip. She started the year by reaching base safely in each of the first 17 games.
 
In conference games only, sophomore Sammi Thomas carries a .375 average, .487 on-base percentage and .781 slugging. She's notched 12 hits in 11 games including four doubles, three triples and a homer.
 
The Islanders have mixed and matched their lineups all year and have used 34 different batting orders in 34 contests.
 
In the circle, Lara has been the ace of the staff. She carries a 10-5 record and 2.10 ERA. She's 5-2 in conference with a 0.85 ERA. Lara has wins this year over UT Arlington, UTSA, Tarleton State, Texas Southern, Sam Houston, Lamar and Incarnate Word.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi's biggest inning this year has been the fourth where it has outscored the opposition 23-16. The Islanders have also started games strong and have outscored teams 23-19 in the first inning.
 
SFA is averaging 9.1 runs per game in conference and has eight hitters above .300. Shaylon Govan is at the top of the stat sheet with a .500 average, 1.088 slugging, six homers and 20 RBIs in 12 conference games.
 
Kassidy Wibur has been a workhorse in the circle for the Ladyjacks. She's started in 20 of the team's 29 games and carries a 17-3 record and 1.07 ERA in 124.1 innings.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi is 16-15 all-time against SFA at home.
