BEAUMONT, Texas – A competitive Lamar Cardinal Challenge has the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program in the top-five of an 11-team field after day one on Monday at Beaumont Country Club.

The Islanders carded a 307 in round one and a 311 in round two. They are 30 strokes behind Sam Houston for first-place, but only nine strokes behind Southern Miss for second.

"We did a lot of good things out there today. We had a really strong round going in the afternoon; however, we allowed some indecision to creep in on several holes on the back side that resulted in big numbers and caused a big swing in score. We have to prevent the big numbers tomorrow - trust our preparation and have confidence in our ability to score. When we play fearless and in the moment, we are capable of great things. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's final round," said head coach Joni Stephens.

Sophomore Lucy Martinez and freshman Lucie Charbonnier are tied for the team lead and are in 14th-place individually. Charbonnier posted the team's low round of the day with a 74 in round one. Martinez shot a 78 in round one but followed it up with a 75 in round two, as the duo both have a 153 (+9).

Just three strokes behind Martinez and Charbonnier are senior Kellsey Sample and junior Kelli Ann Dugan. Sample submitted a 77-79—156 (+12), while Dugan notched a pair of 78's.

Freshman Reese Drezins rounded out the lineup with an 83-82—165 (+21).

Competing as an individual was sophomore Maria Beltran. She turned in a 76-82—158 (+14) to sit in 36th overall.

A&M-Corpus Christi will look to continue its trend of finishing strong as it has recorded its best score in the final round in four of five meets this spring. Play resumes Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. and it will be the final round for the Islanders before the 2021 Southland Conference Championships.
