HOUSTON – In a game filled with hits, it was Texas Southern with the final at-bat in a 6-5 decision over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program in nine innings Wednesday at Memorial Park.
A&M-Corpus Christi (17-25) knocked 12 hits in the game, but the Lady Tigers (11-16) garnered 14 hits including a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Five different Islanders registered multi-hit performances. It included junior
Tiler Noyola, sophomore
Ashleigh Sgambelluri and freshmen
Haley Morse,
Alexandria Torres and
Gabriella Torres. Morse extended her on-base safely streak to 16 games and Noyola 12 games.
With a double in the fifth inning, sophomore
Pal Egan extended her hitting streak to seven games.
The Islanders led 2-0 in the first inning. It came on an RBI single to center by Sgambelluri and a sacrifice fly by Morse.
After TSU got one back in the bottom half, A&M-Corpus Christi went back up 3-1 in the second on an RBI double to left by
Gabriella Torres.
The Lady Lions responded with three runs in the second to go up 4-3, but the Islanders tied it in the third after Sgambelluri scored on a fielding error.
The game was tied again 5-5 in the fifth on an RBI single up the middle by Morse.
The Islanders threw up five consecutive scoreless frames until the ninth when TSU walked it off.
Freshman
Megan DePew got the start and threw the first 2.2 frames. Freshman
Audrey McNeill entered in relief and allowed just one run in 6.0 innings but took the loss.
It was the first game in 11 days for the Islanders who had this past weekend canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. A&M-Corpus Christi is now 20-7 all-time against TSU.
Up next, the Islanders will resume conference play with a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m. against Houston Baptist. Senior Day is Saturday and A&M-Corpus Christi will honor
Kennedy Jimenez,
Daisy Gonzalez,
Skye Koehl and
Katrina Jackson.
