Softball Returns to the Field Wednesday at Texas Southern

Islanders Game Notes

HOUSTON –
Playing its first game in 11 days, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will travel to Texas Southern for a mid-week game Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Memorial Park.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi (17-24, 7-11 SLC) hasn't played since April 18 after having this past weekend at Southeastern Louisiana canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas Southern (10-16, 8-3 SWAC) will meet for the third time this year. In the first two games, the Islanders swept a home doubleheader 5-3 and 7-1 on Feb. 24. The Islanders outhit the Tigers 16-5 over the two games. A&M-Corpus Christi is 20-6 all-time against Texas Southern.
 
Freshman Haley Morse has reached base safely in 15 consecutive games. It included a home run at No. 24 Texas A&M. In conference games only, Morse leads the team with a .320 average. Junior Tiley Noyola has reached base safely in 11 straight outings. She's hitting for a .304 average on the year and is 18-for-20 in stolen bases.
 
The team's leading hitter on the season is sophomore Pal Egan. She's first on the team in both batting average with a .317 mark and on-base percentage with a .482 clip. Egan is currently on a six-game hitting streak. She started the year by reaching base safely in each of the first 17 games. Egan has recorded a team-high 11 multi-games.
 
Also hitting above .300 on the year is sophomore Ashleigh Sgambelluri. She carries a .314 batting average and went on an 11-game hitting streak in the middle of March. Sgambelluri is the only student-athlete to start in all 41 games.
 
The Islanders have mixed and matched their lineups all year and have used 41 different batting orders in 41 contests.
 
In the circle, Lara has been the ace of the staff. She carries an 12-9 record and 2.49 ERA. She has wins this year over UT Arlington, UTSA, Tarleton State, Texas Southern, Sam Houston, Lamar, Incarnate Word and Nicholls.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi posted one of its best performances of the season in its last mid-week game. It shutout UTSA 8-0 in a five-inning mercy rule win and scored at least one run in every inning. Lara threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout and also registered two hits and a walk at the plate, including an RBI triple. The Islanders have won seven of the last eight meetings against UTSA dating back to 2016, including two this year.
 
The Tigers are coming off a doubleheader sweep at Grambling State over the weekend. TSU has won three of its four conference series. Crimson Davis leads the team with a .424 average in 20 starts.
