Islanders Impress at J. Fred Duckett Twilight

HOUSTON, Texas – Headlined by Leonardo Ledgister's win in the 400 hurdles and a pair of silver medals for Dennis Kipngeno and Timor Barrett, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's outdoor track and field squad posted a slew of impressive marks Saturday at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight.

A&M-Corpus Christi fell in head-to-head competition with UTRGV as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, as UTRGV edged past the women 80-70 and posted an 89-55 win on the men's side. Student-athletes from UTRGV and Corpus Christi earned points in a 5-3-2-1 format, with the top two finishers from each team in each event scoring.

Ledgister clocked a 50.26 time in the 400 hurdles for the Islanders' lone event title, besting his previous school record set last week at the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational. Completing the 1-2 punch, Barrett posted a 51.45 mark to claim the runner-up spot behind Ledgister.

Dennis Kipngeno crossed with a season-best 14:26.20 pace in the 5000-meter to add another runner-up finish to the Islanders' day while Valentina Campos took fourth in the same event (third among collegians) behind a 17:40.81 run.

Adding to the top-five efforts, the men's 4x400 relay team of John Moreno, Keenan Lawrence, Barret and Ledgister placed third with a 3:10.81 mark while Capri Wilson (11.94) and Zachary Seaman (1.94m) claimed fourth in the women's 100 dash and men's high jump, respectively.
 
The Islanders saw a string of top-10 times, as Devon Polk leaped to ninth in the high jump and eighth in the 100 hurdles while Wilson added a ninth-place time of 24.46 in the 200 dash that goes down as a new personal best. Erika Snyder finished above Polk with a 1.62m leap for sixth while the women's 4x400 relay quartet of Makalah Griffin, Larissa Manciaz, Jadyn Wagner and Yasmine Steele also clocked a sixth-place time of 3:52.77.

Rounding out the women's top-10 efforts, T-Anna Dawkins recorded a 55.78 sprint in the 400 dash that earned a seventh-place finish.

Finishing just outside the top-10 times, Daniel Armstrong earned 11th in the 110 hurdles with a 14.92 run while Jasmine Perez surpassed her personal best for a 11:43.23 time good for 11th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Up next, the Islanders head to the Texas State Bobcat Classic taking place April 30 – May 1.
