A&M-Corpus Christi Finishes as Runner-Up at SLC Tournament

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The first-ever Southland Conference Beach Volleyball Tournament just didn't end in favor of top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as third-seeded Houston Baptist pulled out a 3-1 decision Sunday at Water's Edge Park.
 
"I'm so incredibly proud of every one of my players tonight! They know how to play true beach volleyball and this is a heartfelt loss. Congrats to HBU for their win; they played well," said head coach Gayle Stammer.

The Islanders (16-12) fell behind early but were looking to rally after dropping the first set on four of five courts to the Huskies (10-21).
 
Seniors Taylor Horsfall and Emily Ramirez put the Islanders on the board with a 21-16, 21-13 win over Kylie Bryan and Mary Alper on court two. Horsfall and Ramirez were unbeaten in the tournament.
 
At court five, senior Micaela Mirabal and junior Kylie Kvam were mounting a comeback. After dropping the first set 21-17, they bounced back to win the second 22-20. They were just beginning the third when the match went unfinished.
 
On the top court, freshmen Giuliana Poletti Corrales and Brooek Pertuit nearly pulled off a huge comeback. After a tough first set, they responded with a 21-12 win in the second. Though, they were edged in the third 15-12.
 
The Islanders had opportunities on courts three and four. Senior Mary Dodge and sophomore Migle Mazurkeviciute had set points in set one, and junior Rachel Young and sophomore Brooke Adkisson had set points in set two, but HBU was able to claw them out.
 
The Islanders concluded the year with a 9-1 record against SLC opponents.
