Islanders Advance to Championship Match with Sweep of SFA

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Another 3-0 sweep has put the top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program in the finals of the Southland Conference Championships after topping third-seeded Stephen F. Austin in the semifinals at Water's Edge Park.
 
The Islanders (16-11) won a couple lopsided matches at the No. 4 and 5 positions, and then finished off the Ladyjacks (10-13) with a clinch on court two.
 
"We are building momentum in this tournament with every dual we play, and I think our scores are a reflection of that. We all played well and our 2's, 4's and 5's ended the dual by winning first," said head coach Gayle Stammer. "We're ready to battle for the championship and I hope we get the same size crowd as we had out there today! It's been an amazing experience so far!"
 
A&M-Corpus Christi's first point came at No. 4 where junior Rachel Young and sophomore Brooke Adkisson posted a dominant 21-12, 21-7 win over Suzana de Oliveira and Rylee Erwin.
 
On the court next to them, the No. 5 duo of senior Micaela Mirabal and junior Kylie Kvam were never in doubt in a 21-11, 21-11 victory over Callie Neumann and Sadie Shipman.
 
The Islanders wrapped it up with win from seniors Taylor Horsfall and Emily Ramirez. They pulled out a straight-set 22-20, 21-18 victory to seal the deal.
 

A&M-Corpus Christi was also battling in a pair of unfinished matches. Freshmen Guiliana Poletti Corrales and Brooke Pertuit split sets and were heading to a third at No. 1, while senior Mary Dodge and sophomore Migle Mazurkeviciute came back from a set down to tie it.
 
The Islanders will await the winner of No. 2 Houston Baptist and No. 3 Stephen F. Austin in the finals. A&M-Corpus Christi is 4-0 this year against the Ladyjacks and 3-0 against the Huskies. The championship match begins at 2 p.m. Sunday.
