Islanders Make Quick Work of UNO in SLC Quarterfinals

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The gusty conditions didn't faze the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program Friday as it cruised to a 3-0 sweep over New Orleans in the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference Tournament at Water's Edge Park.
 
The top-seeded Islanders didn't drop a set against the fifth-seeded Privateers. A&M-Corpus Christi was winning on all five courts, but play was halted after it clinched after the third win.
 
"We all showed up today looking forward to playing in the first Southland Conference Championship. The team came ready and played so well that I knew we'd win the dual after the first set. UNO has a good squad and I would not count them out of this double elimination tournament," said head coach Gayle Stammer.
 
At the top of the lineup, freshmen Giuliana Poletti Corrales and Brooke Pertuit won their fifth match in a row. They breezed to a 21-15, 21-8 victory over Veronica and Victoria Corcoran.
 
It was a similar result at the No. 4 position. Junior Rachel Young and sophomore Brooke Adkisson got off to a fast start and never lost control in a 21-7, 21-14 win over Madeline Drake and Alexa Spartz.

The clinching match came at No. 5. Senior Micaela Mirabal and junior Kylie Kvam ousted Trinity Jackson and Hannah Volpi 21-18, 21-17. Despite not finishing, the Islanders were up a set at both the No. 2 and 3 spots. Seniors Taylor Horsfall and Emily Ramirez were up 21-11 at No. 2, while senior Mary Dodge and sophomore Migle Mazurkeviciute led 22-20 at No. 3.
 
With the win, the Islanders advanced to Saturday's semifinals at 12 p.m. and will face third-seeded Stephen F. Austin. A&M-Corpus Christi defeated the Ladyjacks 5-0 three times this season.
