MCALLEN, Texas – A big first day has the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program in first-place by 15 strokes after two rounds at the UTRGV Invitational at McAllen Country Club.

The Islanders carded a 306 in round one and followed it up with a triumphant 295 in round two to lead the 10-team field with a 601. A&M-Corpus Christi is ahead of second-place UTRGV as the two programs are also competing in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.

The 295 ranks sixth all-time in school history for low round.

"Another solid performance today - really pleased with our composure and focus. The first round we struggled a little at first, maybe a few nerves and indecision because of the speed of the greens, but then we settled into a good rhythm and carried that into the second round. The wind picked up during the second round, and I was proud of the way we handled it with some tough pin placements," said head coach Joni Stephens.

Freshman Lucie Charbonnier leads the team and is in second-place individually. She submitted a 73 in round one and turned in a 75 in round two for a 148 total. She's five strokes behind Julie Lucio (UTRGV) who recorded a 143.

Junior Kelli Ann Dugan, freshman Reese Drezins and senior Kellsey Sample are all keeping pace and are top-eight on the leaderboard. Dugan and Drezins are tied for sixth with a 151, while Sample is one stroke behind in eighth-place with a 152. Dugan and Sample both tallied a low-round of 73.

Looking to make her move in round three will be sophomore Lucy Martinez. After placing second in the Islander Classic two weeks ago, Martinez is in 22nd with a 157.

"It is exciting to see four of our players in the top 10 after the first day. Lucie Charbonnier had a strong performance throughout the day, and Kelli, Reese, and Kellsey really stepped up in the second round to bring in low scores for the team. Lucy played solid most of the day, but unfortunately had a couple of holes in each round that got away from her and kept her from scoring," Stephens said. "I am proud of these five - they are playing with more confidence each tournament. We are looking forward to the final round tomorrow."

The final round will tee-off Tuesday at 8:15 a.m.

The South Texas Showdown, an all-sports competition between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV, is presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. As an institution, the Islanders lead the series 3-1. The Islanders lead this year's standings 22.5-16.5 and A&M-Corpus Christi won the first meeting in golf over the Vaqueros by 48 strokes.
