TUSCON, Ariz. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball earned its second split in as many days in the Cactus Classic finale, starting the day with a 5-0 sweep against Stephen F. Austin before finishing the tournament with a 3-2 battle that favored No. 20 Arizona State Sunday at the Bear Down Beach Courts.
"This was a successful experience for the team and I'm proud of our performances this weekend," said head coach
Gayle Stammer. "We had strong wins against Boise State and SFA, while also battling to the end against No. 15 Arizona and No. 20 Arizona State."
No. 1 pair Giuliana Corrales and
Brooke Pertuit opened the day with an emphatic 21-4, 21-0 Islander point to help set the tone for the match. Following close behind, No. 3
Kylie Kvam and
Brooke Adkisson cruised to a 21-12, 21-15 decision while No. 5
Tori Johnson and
Migle Mazurkeviciute added on point three with a 21-10, 21-14 win and improve the Islander edge to 3-0.
Two more points in the Nos. 4 and 2 spots completed the sweep, seeing
Taylor Horsfall and
Emily Ramirez claim a 21-13, 21-17 outcome while
Mary Dodge and
Micaela Mirabal knocked off SFA in three 15-21, 21-17, 18-16.
The Islanders followed up the sweep with a down-to-the-wire effort against No. 20 Arizona State, as the Sun Devils claimed the opening three points over No. 4 Horsfall and Ramirez (22-20, 21-12), No. 1 Corrales and Pertuit (21-12, 19-21, 15-6), and No. 3 Kvam and Adkisson (21-11, 17-21, 15-10) for the lead.
Three sets would be needed to decide the final points, as A&M-Corpus Christi swiped both thanks to No. 2 Dodge and Mirabal (21-15, 11-21, 15-12) and No. 5 McInnis and
Aurora Carnes (21-19, 17-21, 15-13).
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to action Wednesday at Texas A&M-Kingsville with first serve slated for 10 a.m.
