TUSCON, Ariz. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi split day one of the Cactus Classic, sweeping Boise State 5-0 in the opener before No. 15 Arizona handed the Islanders a 5-0 loss Saturday at Bear Down Beach Courts.
Emily Ramirez and
Taylor Horsfall set the tone in a lopsided Islander victory with a 21-13, 21-13 decision at the No. 4 spot before No. 2 pair
Mary Dodge and
Micaela Mirabal squeaked past the Broncos in a tight 14-21, 21-18, 17-15 thriller to earn a 2-0 lead.

Demi McInnis took the next point on a 21-18, 21-19 win while No. 3
Kylie Kvam and
Brooke Adkisson doubled the Islander advantage on a 20-22, 27-25, 15-10 nail biter. Finishing off the sweep, No. 1 Guiliana Corrales and
Brooke Pertuit rode a 21-21, 21-14 win to secure the sweep.
No. 15 Arizona controlled the lead for the entirety of the match, but the Islanders chipped in strong offensive showings as No. 2 Dodge and Mirabal (19-21, 21-14, 18-16) along with No. 5 Carnes and McInnis (19-21, 21-12, 15-10) took the host to three sets.
The Wildcats got on the board with a 21-16, 21-16 decision over No. 4 Horsfall and Ramirez before finishing off their second sweep of the day with additional points over No. 3 Kvam and Adkission (21-14, 21-16) and No. 1 Corrales and Pertuit (21-19, 21-16).
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to the sand tomorrow (March 7) for another doubleheader against Stephen F. Austin at 10 a.m. before a quick noon turnaround against Arizona State to conclude the Cactus Classic.
