CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In its first conference home games of the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program will host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Friday and Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. Sunday at Dugan Stadium.
Â
It begins a seven-game home stand for A&M-Corpus Christi (2-3-1, 1-1 SLC), the longest in program history.
Â
The Islanders will look to carry momentum into the weekend after shutting out McNeese 3-0 in their last outing. Senior
Abby Deakin put the team on the board in the 55th and they added-on with a tally from senior
Larissa Fagundes in the 60th minute. Senior
Kyleigh Hall recorded a shutout in net.
Â
"We are excited to test ourselves this week against two of the best teams in the conference right now. Northwestern State has only allowed one goal in six games so that will test our offense. UCA has been scoring at a high rate so that will test our back line," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi has had four different goal scorers this year as Deakin and freshmen
Maggie Murray and
Olivia Alvarez have each knocked in two apiece. Deakin has fired a team-high 14 shots with 10 on goal.
Â
Murray and senior
Celia Hilsabeck have started in all six games. Hilsabeck has logged a team-high 475 minutes.
Â
In net, Hall and freshman
Kennedy Stelling have each made three starts and have combined for three shutouts. They've both made 16 saves.
Â
NSU (6-0, 4-0 SLC) is off to a glowing start and has allowed just one goal in six games. Most recently, the Lady Demons swept a home weekend over Nicholls 2-0 and Southeastern Louisiana 1-0. Kalee Williams has scored a team-high four goals, and Acelya Aydogmus has won SLC Goalkeeper of the Week three weeks in a row.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi is 3-4 all-time against NSU but has won three of the last four match-ups. The Islanders went on the road to win 1-0 in the last meeting on Oct. 18, 2019.
Â
UCA (11-3-1, 2-1 SLC) played a full season in the fall. The Sugar Bears are also coming off an unbeaten home weekend over SLU 3-0 and Nicholls 1-0. In conference, Abby Gibson leads the offense with two goals in three games.
Â
The Islanders are also 3-4 all-time against the Sugar Bears. UCA came out on top 1-0 in the last meeting on Oct. 10, 2019 in Conway, Arkansas.
