Islanders Game Notes (PDF) | Live Stats

SAN ANTONIO –
In the midst of a seven-game road swing, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will head to Incarnate Word for two games Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. and a single game Friday at 12 p.m. at H-E-B Field.

The Islanders (14-16, 5-4 SLC) are 5-4 on the road this season with wins at UTSA, UT Arlington and a sweep over Lamar. In their last SLC road series, they swept Lamar to begin their first five-game winning-streak since 2015. They also started a spurt of five consecutive shutouts, which had never been done before in school history.

In the team's last outing, the Islanders dropped a doubleheader to Texas A&M but showed bright spots. A&M-Corpus Christi kept the Aggies scoreless through four innings and was out-hitting them 4-1 at that point. In game two, freshman Haley Morse hit her second homer of the season.

The Islanders are above .500 in conference with a 5-4 record and are going for their first winning season since 2015 when they finished 15-11 SLC. The program hasn't finished above .500 overall since a 41-19 (21-9 SLC) mark in 2011.

Sophomore Ashleigh Sgambelluri is riding an 11-game hitting streak and 15-game reached base streak. She leads the team with a .337 average, including a .379 mark in conference.

Sophomore Pal Egan leads the team in on-base percentage with a .455 clip. She started the year by reaching base safely in each of the first 17 games.

In conference games only, sophomore Sammi Thomas carries a .444 average and team-high .926 slugging. She's etched 12 hits in nine games including four doubles, three triples and a homer.

Sgambelluri and Thomas have been staples to the lineup and have started in all 30 games. Though despite that, the Islanders have mixed and matched their lineups all year and have used 30 different batting orders in 30 contests.

In the circle, sophomore Beatriz Lara has been the ace of the staff. She sports a 9-5 record and 2.36 ERA. She's 4-2 in conference with a 1.12 ERA. Lara has wins this year over UT Arlington, UTSA, Tarleton State, Texas Southern, Sam Houston and Lamar.

Sophomore Jenika Lombrana has been strong in conference with a 2.21 ERA. In last week's mid-week start, she registered a win over Tarleton where she threw 6.0 frames. On the season, Lombrana has punched out 48 strikeouts in 56.1 innings.

A&M-Corpus Christi has started and finished strong in games this season. It has outscored the opposition 21-19 in the first inning and 14-9 in the seventh.

The Islanders are 14-1 on the year when tied or leading after four innings.

UIW (6-15, 2-7 SLC) has won four of its last five games. Last weekend, it went on the road and won the series at Nicholls. Annie Gunther leads the pitching staff with a 2.64 ERA in 58.1 innings with five complete-games.

A&M-Corpus Christi is 9-6 all-time against Incarnate Word, including a 4-2 mark on the road. The two teams did not meet in 2020 due to COVID-19.
