Softball Gets Ready for Stiff Test at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will look to continue its success on the road when it travels to Texas A&M for a Tuesday doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at Davis Diamond.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi (14-14, 5-4 SLC) is 5-2 on the road this year with wins at UTSA, UT Arlington and a sweep at Lamar.
 
In its last mid-week competition, the Islanders swept a doubleheader over Tarleton State at home. It was the third win over the Texans this year after also taking a 13-3 decision in five innings at the Scrap Yard Blizzard Challenge on Feb. 20 in Conroe, Texas.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi is looking to bounce back from a tough weekend against McNeese. The entire series flipped in the seventh inning of game one where the Cowgirls hit a two out homer to tie the game 2-2 and went on to win in extra innings. Sophomore Pal Egan hit for a .444 average on the weekend.
 
Sophomore Ashleigh Sgambelluri is riding a nine-game hitting streak and 13-game reached base streak. She leads the team with a .346 average, including a .379 mark in conference. Freshman Alie Alcantar has made the most of her opportunities since being inserted into the starting lineup. She's on an eight-game hitting streak in eight starts and is batting for a .333 average.
 
In the circle, sophomore Beatriz Lara has been the ace of the staff. She sports a 9-4 record and 2.01 ERA. She's 4-2 in conference with a 1.12 ERA. Lara has wins this year over UT Arlington, UTSA, Tarleton State, Texas Southern, Sam Houston and Lamar.
 
Sophomore Jenika Lombrana has been strong in conference with a 2.21 ERA. In last week's mid-week start, she registered a win over Tarleton where she threw 6.0 frames. On the season, Lombrana has punched out 48 strikeouts in 56.1 innings.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi has started and finished strong in games this season. It has outscored the opposition 21-16 in the first inning and 14-9 in the seventh.
 
The Islanders are 14-1 on the year when tied or leading after four innings.
 
Texas A&M (23-5, 4-2 SEC) is receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll. The Aggies are coming off a weekend sweep over No. 23 South Carolina.
 
The Islanders are used to playing tough opponents this year. They've played four games against ranked teams and Tuesday will be the second against a squad receiving votes.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi is going for its first win over the Aggies since 2010 and the second in school history; they've met 14 times previously.
