UIW Slips Past A&M-Corpus Christi 1-0

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In a game that could have gone either way, Incarnate Word scored the only tally in a 1-0 decision over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program on Friday at Dugan Stadium.

Both teams fired exactly four shots on goal, but UIW (3-3-1, 2-2-1 SLC) garnered a score from Lauren Miller on a header in the box in the 59th minute.

"We were definitely the better team on the night, but we need to take care of our chances and not let bad calls beat us," said head coach Craig Shaw. We will learn and grow from this. One result doesn't define our season and we will bounce back Sunday.

A&M-Corpus Christi (3-4-2, 2-2-1 SLC) recorded a total of seven shots. Senior Abby Deakin and freshmen Maggie Murray and Olivia Alvarez each notched a pair, while senior Larissa Fagundes registered one.

Sophomore defender Alana Mangan played all 90 minutes on the back line. Reigning Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week winner Reese Cross got the start and logged 46 minutes.

In net, senior goalkeeper Kyleigh Hall made her sixth consecutive start and made three saves.

A&M-Corpus Christi had twice as many corner kick opportunities 6-3.

The two teams have now split the last two meetings after the Islanders dismissed the Cardinals in the 2019 SLC Championships on penalty kicks 4-2.

A&M-Corpus Christi will wrap up the weekend with a 1 p.m. Sunday game against Abilene Christian at Dugan Stadium.
