Birmingham, Ala. – The men posted a 55-point, second day effort to secure fourth and tally a program-best finish as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track and field concluded the final day of Southland Indoor Championship action Monday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
"I couldn't be happier with how the men's team competed this weekend," said head coach
Brent Ericksen. "For us to finish fourth and score 73 points in a 13-team field is a nice step for the program."
Stephen F. Austin claimed the men's trophy with 105 points, but the Islander men used a strong second day to vault to fourth on 73 points after beginning the day in eighth for the best team finish in program history. On the women's side, Abilene Christian took home its first title in program history with 107 points while A&M-Corpus Christi (38) placed 10
th overall.
The Islanders shined in the distance events, earning a top-5 finisher on both sides of the 3000-meter and 5000-meter races. Once again,
Valentina Campos and
Dennis Kipngeno led the way for the Islanders as Campos earned bronze in the 3000-meter with a 9:57.57 pace and followed it up in the 5000-meter taking fourth behind a 17:24.66 time. Kipngeno carried similar results, garnering two podium appearances with silver in the 3000-meter (8:24.51) and bronze in the 5000-meter (14:21.60).
Another school record shattered during day two for the Islanders, this time on the men's side in the 400-meter as Leonardo Ledigster (47.23) and
Timor Barrett (47.41) connected on the 2-3 punch as they both crossed the previous record mark.
The Islanders marked their final podium rankings bronze medals being awarded to Ketavion Humber (8.08) in the 60-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay team of
Makalah Griffin,
Jadyn Wagner,
Yasmine Steele,
Larissa Manciaz (3:52.07).
Helping stretch their second-day stride, the men's 4x400 relay team of Ketavion Humber,
Keenan Lawrence,
Timor Barrett, and Leonardo Ledigster claimed another silver finish for the men with a combined 3:13.07 mark.
A&M-Corpus Christi shifts to the outdoor slate beginning at UTSA on March 18.
