Islanders Improve after Each Round at Texas State Invitational

KYLE, Texas – The scores got better as the tournament went on for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program in its season opener Monday and Tuesday at the Texas State Invitational at Plum Creek Golf Course.
 
After a two and a half hour fog delay, the Islanders carded a 312 in the opening round, but improved to a 308 in round two and 300 in round three.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi finished in 12th overall, ahead of UTRGV, Lamar and Wichita State.
 
"Overall, I was really pleased with with the energy and effort we showed over the last two days," said head coach Joni Stephens. "We didn't play well our first round. We were a little intimidated by the pin locations and the greens were tough to read, so we didn't putt well. Though, our goal was to try and get better every round and we did that. We started to gain confidence and hit good shots. I was very happy with the effort."
 
Senior Kellsey Sample guided the Islanders with a 221 score to finish 16th individually. She started it off with a 75 in round one and topped it with a 74 in round two and 72 in round three. Her round two and three scores both bested her season low of 75 from last season.

"Kellsey's maturity is really starting to show and she's really been patient out there. She's been making good decisions and I'm very pleased to see her play well. She was solid from tee to green, and for her to shoot even par the last round is really exciting," Stephens said.
 
Strong final rounds also came from junior Kelli Dugan and freshman Lucie Charbonnier. Dugan posted a 78 in each of the first two rounds and ended with a 76 for a 232 total. Just one stroke behind was Charbonnier who carded a 74 in round three after tallying a 78 in round one and 81 in round two.
 
Closing out the lineup was sophomore Maria Beltran and sophomore Mackenzie Fee who submitted scores of 235 and 244, respectively.
 
Up next, A&M-Corpus Christi will host the Islander Classic on Feb. 22-23 at Corpus Christi Country Club. It will also be the first of two head-to-head match-ups against UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
