SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore
Beatriz Lara threw a complete-game to guide the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program to a 2-1 victory over host UTSA in its own tournament Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
Â
Lara picked up her third win of the season after striking out seven in 7.0 innings. The Islanders (6-4) led UTSA (4-2) 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh when the Roadrunners threatened with a one-out double. After a fly out and a walk, Lara forced a fly out to right center field and junior
Tiler Noyola made the grab to end the game.
Â
With a walk in the third inning, sophomore
Pal Egan has reached base safely in all 10 games this year.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi got on the board in its first at-bat. After sophomores
Sammi Thomas and
Ashleigh Sgambelluri walked, both runners moved up a base on a double steal. An RBI ground out to the right side by Egan made it 1-0.
Â
The Islanders tacked-on its second run in the third. With two outs and the bases loaded, Noyola dashed home on a wild pitch and came in safely to increase the edge to 2-0.
Â
Also with hits in the game were freshman
Haley Morse on a double and freshman
Sydney Hoyt. The hits were even in the game 4-4 as Kat Ibarra knocked a pair for UTSA.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi will look to carry momentum into Thursday when it plays the first of five games at the UTA Tournament in Arlington, Texas. The first game is Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against North Texas.
