SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program battled with five runs in the seventh inning, but UT Arlington came out on top 9-7 in the first game of the UTSA Classic at Roadrunner Field.

The Islanders (4-3) cranked four homers against the Mavs (1-3) with three of them coming in the seventh. Junior
Tiler Noyola, sophomore
Sammi Thomas, sophomore
Ashleigh Sgambelluri and freshman
Haley Morse all tallied their first homers of the year.

Sgambelluri and Morse each tallied two hits in the game. It was Sgambelluri's fourth multi-hit outing of the season and Morse's first.

With a hit in the seventh inning, sophomore
Pal Egan extended her on-base streak to seven (every game this year).

The Islanders fell behind 8-0 and were on the verge of surrendering to the eight-run mercy rule in the fifth inning before they punched back. They got on the board with an RBI single by Morse, which plated sophomore
MacKenzie Purcell.

Both teams scored one run in the sixth inning. Noyola's homer to left center made it a 9-2 game.

The big seventh inning started with a leadoff walk by freshman
Sydney Hoyt and was followed by a homer to left by Morse to cut it to 9-4. After a walk by freshman
Bailey Payne, Thomas delivered a two-run shot over the wall in left center to trim the deficit to 9-6 with one out. Sgambelluri then went back-to-back with Thomas to change the score to 9-7. Though, after a single to left by Egan, the Mavs ended the threat with a strike out and a groundout.

Sophomore
Jenika Lombrana got the start and struck out five in 4.1 innings. Freshman
Audrey McNeill and Hoyt both made appearances in relief. Gracie Bumpurs picked up the win for UTA after 5.2 frames and Kenedy Hines was credited the save.

The two teams will rematch at 10 a.m. tomorrow. It will be a doubleheader for A&M-Corpus Christi, which will play Kansas at 12:30 p.m.
