Beach Volleyball Defeats UL-Monroe, Falls to No. 1 LSU on Day One of HBU Tournament

HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program opened the season with a 3-2 victory over UL-Monroe before falling to No. 1 LSU 5-0 on the first of two days Friday at the HBU Beach Volleyball Tournament.
 
"We posted a strong win against UL-Monroe and it really helped us get rid of some first-match nerves that we may have had coming in. It was our first match in over a year and we were able to get settled in and finish it off," said head coach Gayle Stammer. "Against LSU, we wanted to play our best volleyball. We wanted to win, but LSU is the number one team in the nation for a reason. They played better than us today, but we showed bright spots and did some things really well."
 
The Islanders (1-1) started the day on a high note. They got out to a quick 2-0 lead after posting wins at the No. 4 and 5 positions. The team of junior Demi McInnis and senior Emily Ramirez cruised to a straight-set win at No. 4, while sophomores Aurora Carnes and Migle Mazurkeviciute pulled out a tight three-setter 15-13 in the third.
 
The clinching match came at the No. 3 spot. Since No. 4, 5, 6 and played first, the A&M-Corpus Christi only needed one more victory. The duo of junior Kylie Kvam and sophomore Brooke Adkisson ended it with a 21-12, 22-20 win.
 
Against No. 1 LSU, the Islanders fell behind but battled the whole way. A&M-Corpus Christi's best showing was at No. 4 where McInnis and Ramirez went the distance in a three-setter. They won the second game 21-15 before being edged in the third 15-11.
 
The Islanders will be back at it tomorrow when they conclude the tournament against the host Houston Baptist at 10 a.m. and rematch UL-Monroe at 12:30 p.m.
