Islanders Head to San Antonio for Weekend at UTSA Classic

Islanders Game Notes | Live Stats

SAN ANTONIO – Coming off a doubleheader sweep, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will look to carry momentum into the weekend when it competes in the UTSA Classic at Roadrunner Field.

A&M-Corpus Christi (4-2) will begin with a 1 p.m. Friday game against UT Arlington, and the two teams will rematch at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Islanders will follow it up with a 12:30 p.m. against Kansas on Saturday before wrapping it up with a 12:30 p.m. game Sunday against the host UTSA.

The Islanders played their first home games Wednesday in their last outing. They swept Texas Southern 5-3 and 7-1 after outhitting the Tigers 16-5 over the two games.

Last weekend, the Islanders opened the season at the Scrap Yard Blizzard Challenge and went 2-2 with wins over Tarleton State and Wichita State. Their only losses were to No. 11 Oklahoma State. For the tournament, sophomore Ashleigh Sgambelluri hit for a .444 average and .538 on-base percentage. It included a pair of multi-hit games.

Sgambelluri has started all six games at shortstop and is hitting for a .400 average and .524 on-base percentage with four runs and six RBIs. She's also 3-for-3 in stolen bases. Sgambelluri has three-multi hit games on the season.

A&M-Corpus Christi is a perfect 20-for-20 in stolen base attempts. Eight different student-athletes have swiped a bag this year.

Sophomore Pal Egan has reached base safely in all six games this year. She hoists a team-high .550 on-base percentage.

A&M-Corpus Christi has mixed and matched its lineups, and has used six different batting orders in six games.

In the circle, sophomores Jenika Lombrana and Beatriz Lara are both 2-1 and unbeaten against unranked opponents. They both pitched 6.0 innings in wins over TSU.  Last year, Lombrana threw a team-high 72.1 innings and carried a 2.90 ERA in the shortened season.

UTA (0-3) has played a tough schedule so far and dropped two games to Arkansas and one to Baylor. The Islanders are 13-14 against old Southland Conference rival UTA, but the two teams have not played since 2012.

Kansas (1-3) is looking to shake-off a 5-3 defeat to LSU in its last game. The Islanders and Jayhawks have only met one time back in 2006 when Kansas finished ahead 15-1.

UTSA (2-0) swept a doubleheader over Lamar in its only games this year. Like UTA, the Roadrunners used to be an SLC foe for the Islanders as the two programs have squared off 55 times in the past. Despite trailing the all-time series 33-22, A&M-Corpus Christi won the last meeting 1-0 in 2019 and have won five of the last six.
