CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
In its first home games of 2021, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program will host Texas Southern in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Chapman Field.

It was originally supposed to be a single game at 3 p.m. but the teams agreed to play two yesterday.

A&M-Corpus Christi (2-2) began the season this past weekend and submitted a strong showing at the Scrap Yard Blizzard Challenge. The Islanders defeated Tarleton State 13-3 and Wichita State 5-1. They are unbeaten against unranked opponents as their only losses came to No. 11 Oklahoma State.

For the tournament, sophomore Ashleigh Sgambelluri led A&M-Corpus Christi hit for a .444 average and .538 on-base percentage. It included a pair of multi-hit games. Sophomore Pal Egan reached base safely in all four games.

A&M-Corpus Christi's biggest inning in the tournament was the fourth where it outscored the opposition 8-2.

Sophomore Jenika Lombrana fired a complete-game and struck out 10 batters in 7.0 innings in the win over Wichita State. She did not allow an earned run and picked up the victory. Lombrana returned after throwing a team-high 72.1 innings last season and carried a 2.90 ERA and won four games.

Another stellar performance in the circle came from sophomore Beatriz Lara who registered the win against Tarleton State. She pitched a complete-game and surrendered just one earned run. Lara struck out five and had zero walks.

Head coach Kristen Zaleski is in her second season at the helm. Her first season was cut short due to COVID-19. Zaleski arrived from Temple College where she compiled a 413-127 overall record in nine seasons. She led Temple to the NJCAA Division I national title in 2018.

Zaleski has used four different lineups in four games this year.

Texas Southern (0-1) has only played one game this season and fell to Houston 8-0. The Lady Tigers had their three-game series over the weekend at Incarnate Word canceled.

A&M-Corpus Christi is 18-6 all-time against Texas Southern and 10-4 at home.
