CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas
– Behind a runner-up finish from sophomore Lucy Martinez, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program finished second as a team at the 2021 Islander Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the Corpus Christi Country Club.

The Islanders carded a 293 in round three, which was the third lowest 18-hole team round in school history.

"I am so proud of the way this team handled themselves this week. A home tournament is a special event, and we look forward to our Islander Classic every year. The lead up to this year's event was a very unusual week with extreme cold and power outages, and we weren't able to practice and prepare like we usually would before a tournament," said head coach Joni Stephens. "But we took care of business this week; when one girl faltered, the others picked up the slack. It did take us a few holes to find our rhythm today, but we had great energy on the course, and these girls displayed patience and a confidence that was good to see. Today was a glimpse into the potential of this team. Although we wanted to come away with the championship trophy, I am proud of how they worked together and that we did bring home a second-place team award."

The Islanders posted a score of 900 (306-301-293) and were 10 strokes behind Sam Houston's 890 (298-302-290). A&M-Corpus Christi finished ahead of Houston Baptist, Weber State, Incarnate Word, Ball State, UTRGV, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton State, Prairie View A&M and McLennan CC.

Additionally, A&M-Corpus Christi defeated UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown after finishing 48 strokes ahead of the Vaqueros. The South Texas Showdown is an all-sport competition between the two institutions, sponsored by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.

Martinez's second-place showing came after a solid three rounds of 73-73-72 (218). She finished just one stroke out of first-place behind SHSU's Leah Alberto.

"I'm extremely proud of Lucy's performance this week, she had a great tournament. She is striking the ball so well right now, and she displayed great touch around and on the greens. I'm so excited to see her bring home a second-place individual award," Stephens said.

A top-10 finish came from freshman Lucie Charbonnier, who ended seventh with a 76-76-75 (227).

"Lucie also had a good tournament. In only her third tournament as a collegiate player, she continues to show us the determination and competitive mindset that we saw when she was recruited, and I can't wait to see what the season holds for her," Stephens said.

Top-15 finishes came from junior Kelli Ann Dugan who registered an 81-77-74 (232) and senior Kellsey Sample tallied a 76-82-72 (233).

Freshman Reese Drezins placed top-30 with an 81-75-83 (239). Sophomore Mackenzie Fee competed as an individual and submitted a 76-80-78 (234) to grab 16th-place.

A&M-Corpus Christi will next compete on March 8-9 when it heads to the UTRGV Invitational, which will include a South Texas Showdown rematch.
