CONROE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program notched a big 5-1 victory over Wichita State before dropping the finale to No. 11 Oklahoma State 11-0 on Sunday at the Scrap Yard Blizzard Challenge.
For the tournament, sophomore
Ashleigh Sgambelluri led A&M-Corpus Christi (2-2) and hit for a .444 average and .538 on-base percentage. It included a pair of multi-hit games.
In game one, Sgambelluri went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while junior
Kennedy Jimenez finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
Junior
Jenika Lombrana fired a complete-game and struck out 10 batters in 7.0 innings. She did not allow an earned run and picked up the win.
Wichita State (2-1) got on the board first with a run in the second inning, but the Islanders tied it in the third on a sacrifice fly by Sgambelluri. It plated junior
Tiler Noyola who walked, stole second and advanced to third on a fielder's choice.
The big inning came in the fifth where A&M-Corpus Christi plated four runs to go up 5-1. It started with a single by senior
Skye Koehl, who came around to score on an error. Jimenez added an RBI single, which was followed by a two-out, two RBI double by Sgambelluri.
In the night cap against No. 11 OSU (5-0), the Sooners grabbed an early 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and second innings. OSU piled on late to finish the game in six innings. Kelly Maxwell threw a no-hitter in 6.0 innings and struck out 10.
In relief, freshman
Audrey McNeill made her first appearance of the season. She allowed just two earned runs in 4.2 innings and struck out three.
The Islanders will play their home opener Wednesday when they host Texas Southern at 3 p.m. at Chapman Field.
