Kipngeno Qualifies for NCAA Cross Country Finals, Will Compete for National Championship

November 13, 2021

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Becoming the first Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country student-athlete to reach the NCAA Championship in 10 years, junior Dennis Kipngeno will race for a national title on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 10:10 a.m. (CT) at Apalachee Regional Park.

The race will be nationally televised on ESPNU.

Kipngeno is the first Islander to make it to the final stage since Patrick Kimeli in 2011. He's just the third male to ever compete along with All-American Shadrack Songok in 2006 and 2007.

Kipngeno qualified after running a 10K time of 31:05.1 at NCAA South Central Regionals, hosted by Baylor. Missing out on qualifying by one spot was freshman Kelvin Kimaiyo, the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year.

Kipngeno was named to the 2021 All-Conference First-Team after clocking in at 24:41.33 in the 8K at the SLC Championship, which was good for fourth-place.

The highest an A&M-Corpus Christi student-athlete has ever finished at the NCAA Finals is seventh-place by Songok in 2007 with a time of 29:50.1.
