SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's cross country raced to a pair of runner-up team titles Saturday at the UIW Invitational.
The men's team earned 50 points and the women 37 points to sweep the runner-up team titles in the 11-school field.
A&M-Corpus Christi ran three of the top-five times, as newcomer
Kelvin Kimaiyo paced the men's runners with a first-place finish and clocked a race-best 24:31.5. Fellow Islander
Dennis Kipngeno was next to cross the line with a 24:31.8 second-place run while
Tristan Stellmach claimed fifth in 24:37.8.
Juan Salinas III finished among the top-15, taking 13
th with a 25:50.8 pace.
"Kelvin and Dennis went 1-2 with less than a second between while Tristan ran a great race as well," said head coach
Brent Ericksen.
On the women's side,
Sharon Kiprop led the pack for the second-straight race and finished fourth with a time of 17:14.7. The Islanders saw three additional runners run top-10 times, as
Faith Bett took sixth (17:25.5),
Jasmine Perez claimed seventh (17:41.9) and
Quin Johnson finished ninth (17:43.4).
Valentina Campos landed within the top-15, clocking an 18:04.5 time for 12
th place.
"Overall, a good day for us, as we had 4 ladies run below 18 minutes, led by
Sharon Kiprop's 17:15 time," said Ericksen. "I know our best races are still ahead of us."
A&M-Corpus Christi resumes competition Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M.
