FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Freshman
Anastacia Johnson turned in her best round of the season to headline the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf program's outing at the Colorado State Ptarmigan Ram Classic at Ptarmigan Country Club.
Johnson carded a 71 on Tuesday to finish with a 224 overall. It was the team's best score by four strokes and good for 19th-place overall in a field of 81. Johnson improved 18 strokes from her previous tournament at Sam Houston on Sept. 28.
"Anastacia had a breakthrough round today - her first under-par round in college. She was solid all day, hitting 12 greens and making some good saves for par on the greens she didn't hit. I was very pleased to see her hard work pay off for her with a top-20 finish in a strong field," said head coach
Joni Stephens.
As a team, the Islanders moved up one spot in the final round to place ninth overall out of 15 Division I institutions. A&M-Corpus Christi scored a 916.
"Yesterday's second round was a race to beat sundown, and we played several holes with minimal light and feeling rushed. Today we had colder temps and a 20mph wind from the north, making conditions tougher than the first day. However, this is part of college golf. We have to be mentally stronger so we can adapt to the current situation and still get the job done. We are getting better but there is still work to be done," Stephens said.
Senior
Kellsey Sample remained consistent and was the team's second finisher on the leaderboard with a 228. She placed 33rd overall after recording a 76 in round three.
"Kellsey was also able to bring in a good score today, showing patience coming into her final holes and finishing strong with birdies on her last two holes," said Stephens.
Sophomore
Lucie Charbonnier and freshman
Reagan Gray tied for 51st with 234 scores. Junior
Lucy Martinez rounded it out with a 237.
"Our golfers are getting to a higher level of play; I am seeing improvement in every tournament in many areas. However, we continue to have momentary lapses in each round where we have big numbers, usually caused by either a wrong decision, not trusting and committing to the shot, or not staying patient throughout the round," Stephens said. "We keep learning and moving forward."
It was the final meet of the fall for the Islanders. Their next tournament is Feb. 7 when they open the spring at the Texas State Invitational in Kyle, Texas. A&M-Corpus Christi will host the Islander Classic on Feb. 21-22 at Lozano Golf Club.
