FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Looking to end the fall on a high note, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf program will compete in the Colorado State Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Monday and Tuesday at Ptarmigan Country Club.
Â
Play will begin at 9 a.m. (MT) with a shotgun start both days. The teams will play 36 holes Monday and 18 holes Tuesday on a par 72, 6,468-yard course.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi will be competing in a 15-team field along with Colorado State, Boise State, Cal Poly, Denver, Idaho, UIW, Montana State, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Omaha, South Dakota, Tarleton State, UC Riverside and Wyoming.
Â
The Islanders will be represented by senior
Kellsey Sample, junior
Lucy Martinez, sophomore
Lucie Charbonnier and freshmen
Reagan Gray and
Anastacia Johnson.
Â
"This will be our first time competing at Colorado State. This team loves the challenge of a new course, and we are excited to see what we can do. We have the same five in the line-up that competed at the SHSU Bearkat, and they have done some good work preparing for the Ptarmigan Ram Classic. We struggled hitting greens at our last tournament, so that has been our main focus. We are going up against a strong field in Fort Collins; we know we have to hit more greens and convert more birdies to be competitive in the field," said head coach
Joni Stephens.
Through three tournaments, Gray has paced the Islanders with a 74.56 scoring average. She's shot below par in two rounds. Sample carries the team's low round with a 70 at Sam Houston, and averages a 75.78 on the season.
Â
Charbonnier is second on the team with a 75.67 scoring average, which includes a low round of 71. She led the team with a 228 in the team's last outing at New Mexico State. Martinez is less than a stroke behind with a 75.67 average.
Â
Johnson will make her second appearance of the year. In her first collegiate meet, she carded a 242 at Sam Houston.
Â
"Our golfers are showing confidence in all aspects of the game and they have shown the ability to go low. In our last tournament we were trying too hard to create a score, and we got caught up in the uncontrollables; we play our best when we are patient, stay in the moment and in our process, and control what we can control. That will be our goal this week," Stephens said.
